Mello gets 'hat trick'

Published: December 5, 2012

After being deadlocked in a 0-0 tie for the first 50 minutes of the game, The Yosemite High School boys soccer team was defeated by Madera High 5-0 Nov. 26.

"The team was really disappointed by this game," coach Rick Lemberg said. "The team was playing well and then we gave up a penalty kick, a direct kick and got two yellow cards which forced us to play a player short."

On Nov. 28, the team lost to Clovis High 2-1.

"The Clovis game was a much better game for us and a good effort by the whole team," Lemberg said. "They scored a goal with about a minute to play in the game to beat us."

Yosemite's goal was scored by Tyler McIntyre.

The team travelled to Sierra on Nov. 30 for the Mountain Match Up Tournament and beat Fresno Christian High School in their first game 6-0.

Alex Mello got a hat trick scoring three goals and Zack Voltmer, Christ Grant and Tyler McIntrye scored a goal.

The team then played Firebaugh to a 2-2 tie, with Mello getting both goals on assists from Grant and McIntrye.

The team won its bracket in the tournament that was cut shot by bad weather. The tournament will finish Dec. 10 with the Badgers in the championship round.

"We played well in the tournament, but all play was hampered by the weather," Lemberg said. "Both games were played in the rain and the field was covered with water. It was more like playing water polo than soccer, but the team held it together, made adjustments and hung in there for the win and tie."

The team played Roosevelt High School and Fresno High School earlier this week and travels to Lemoore for a weekend tournament.
