The Mountain Area Ski School is a volunteer program that provides basic instruction in skiing, snowboarding and cross-country/telemark skiing to local elementary school students. The organization has served Mountain Area children for more than 35 years and is seeking volunteer instructors for this season.
You need not be an expert to teach in the program -- only better than those you are teaching.
Interested instructors are required to attend an orientation meeting at 9 a.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at the Oakhurst Lutheran Church, 39255 Crane Valley Road (426).
A clinic is held at the beginning of each season to teach our instructors how to teach and to refresh those who have taught before. This year the clinic will be held at 9 a.m. at Badger Pass on Dec. 21. Instructors are required to attend.
The program for the students will begin on Friday, Jan. 11, and will continue through the Friday before Good Friday or earlier. There will be approximately 12 days of instruction. Since instructor insurance costs about $70 per person, the program requires a commitment of at least nine during the season.
There is the possibility that if there are not enough instructors, the number of children who want to participate may have to be reduced.
For each day of instruction, the volunteer will be eligible for a free Badger Pass lift ticket to be used before the next teaching day.
Ski instructor applications are available at Miller's Mountain Sports, Sierra Tel Business Center and True Value Hardware in Yosemite Lakes Park. Applications may also be downloaded at M-A-S-S.org.

The program serves about 250 elementary school students annually. There is a registration fee for students and a weekly fee of $15 plus a transportation fee.
