November 1, 2012

The Minarets High School volleyball team (16-6, 6-2) suffered its second loss to Fowler in West Sequoia League play Oct. 23 in three matches 25-22, 25-11, 25-21, ending the team's hopes for a league championship.

Bre Cairns had eight kills, Taylor Meyer had 13 assists and Katie Grant had eight digs in the game.

Fowler also beat the Mustangs on Oct. 18, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20.

In that game, Cairns had seven kills, Jordan Smith had five kills and 13 digs, Grant had four kills, 13 digs, and two stuff blocks and Meyer had 19 assists.

"Although we lost, the night was still a success in that the game was well attended and the referees commented that of all the Dig Pink matches they'd officiated, our's was the best they had ever seen," said coach Karra Zamora. "We gave gifts of pink socks and jerseys to our opponent, played with a pink ball, had volleyball court lines in pink and were decked out in pink from head to toe. We raised almost $1,000., honoring breast cancer survivors, had games and prizes for our fans, and actually played a really good match. Fowler was just better.

On Oct. 25 the Mustangs beat Fresno Christian at home, 25-18, 25-15, 25-20. Grant had five stuff blocks and 16 digs, Meyer had 24 assists and four ace serves and Smith had 11 kills.

On Oct. 16, the team beat Parlier in three matches, 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.

Last week we were without our most powerful hitter and best blocker, Bre Cairns because she was competing in Indianapolis for the National FFA Parliamentary Procedure Championship.

"Without Bre, I was quite anxious about how we'd do with a new rotation."

The Mustangs beat Riverdale last week , although it took four games, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-18. Smith had 12 kills and 15 digs. Tara True had 6 kills, 6 aces and 10 digs. Grant had 14 digs and Meyer had 6 aces and 24 assists.

On Thursday we went to Fresno Christian and beat them in three. 25-23, 25-18, and 25-20. Tara True had 10 kills. Katie Grant had 17 digs, 7 kills, and 4 stuff blocks. Jordan Smith had 7 kills, and 10 digs. Sadie Kubiak had 11 digs and 3 aces. Taylor Meyer had 24 assists and 3 aces.

The team is still ranked No. 1 in Div. V by the Fresno Bee and will enter Central Section play-offs next week. The team is hosting Parlier tonight (Thursday) for senior night.
