On Oct. 30 around 3:09 p.m., Esmeralda Hernandez, 29, of Clovis, was driving a 2006 Honda CRX northbound on Highway 41 approaching Mecca Lane at an undetermined speed. A one-year-old passenger was in the vehicle with her. Angelo Hernandez, 21, was driving a 2005 Ford F-150 pick up truck pulling a small utility trailer southbound on Highway 41 south of Mecca Lane at an undetermined speed. Roman Hernandez, 18, was a passenger in the vehicle both men from Clovis. Esmeraldas Honda drifted across the center line into the opposing traffic lane and collided into the Ford.
Esmeralda and her one-year-old passenger were air lifted by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center. Esmeralda suffered serious injuries to her head, neck and back. The one-year-old passenger was in an infant child passenger safety restraint and suffered unknown injuries. It did not appear to have any visible injuries and did not appear to be injured.
Angelo and Roman were transported by ground ambulance with minor injuries to Clovis Community Hospital. Esmeralda was determined to be under the influence at the time of the collision and to be the proximate cause of the collision. Esmeralda was arrested and felony charges are forthcoming for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and child endangerment.
The traffic collision remains under investigation.
