The Griswold Mountain Detachment 1121 of the Marine Corps League will hold their annual birthday celebration with a dinner Nov. 10 at the Oakhurst Elks Lodge 2724. A no-host bar will open at 5 p.m. and the birthday ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.

The United States Marine Corps 237th birthday is Nov. 10, a tradition established by Lieutenant General John Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Since its creation on Nov. 10, 1775, by a resolution of the Continental Congress, many thousands of men and women have borne the name "Marine." It is in their memory that Marines, worldwide, commemorate the birthday of the corps each year with a ceremonial cake cutting, wherein the oldest and youngest Marines present are honored with the first and second pieces of cake, respectively. The cake cutting is followed by a formal dinner.

The public is invited to participate the Griswold Mountain celebration at the Elks Lodge.

For details or reservations, requested by Nov. 3, call Lynn Russell, (559-683-8119).
