Minarets ranked No. 1

The Minarets High School girls volleyball team if off to a 5-0 start this season and is currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Section Division VI after defeating Tranquility 3-0, Laton 2-1, Firebaugh 3-0, Farmersville 3-0 and Tranquility for a second time 3-0.

The Mustangs, under the leadership of head coach Karra Zamora, are members of the West Sequoia League this season with Parlier, Riverside, Caruthers, Fowler and Fresno Christian. League play starts next week.

The team is made up of four seniors, five juniors and a freshman.

In the team's last match, the Mustangs dominated Tranquility winning three of four games, 25-6, 25-10, 21-25 and 25-9.

Breanna Caims had 9 kills, setter Taylor Meyer had 24 assists and Jordan Smith contributed 20 digs in the game.

Against Firebaugh, the Mustangs won three straight games, 25-10, 25-22, 25-17.

Katie Grant had eight kills, Meyer had 23 assists, Caims had six ace serves and Smith had seven digs.

"We are anxious to get into league play," Zamora said. "They moved us up this year and we are excited to take on the challenge."

The team plays in the Madera South Tournament this weekend.
