Classic cars will adorn community center grounds this weekend

The Oakhurst Kiwanis Club will host the 10th Annual Classic Car Show Friday and Saturday at the Oakhurst Community Center with more than 100 cars from the past on display.

Funds have been used for repair and maintenance of band instruments, costumes for a play and a musical, books, art supplies, computers, field trips, resource libraries and help with an intervention program that keeps students from falling behind in their school work.

Chairman of this year's show is club member Gary Marshall.

"One of the goals of the club is to enhance the community and the best way to do that is to enhance the children."

In addition to the mini-grants, the show awards three $500 awards for Best of Show, Best Hot Rod and Kiwanis Choice.

Categories include corvettes, Street Rods, Muscle Cars (GTO's, Chargers, Mustangs and Vipers), Pick-Ups, T-Birds, Roadsters, 1955-1957 Chevys, Modified Cars and pre 1982 Cameros.

This year's featured make of car is the Chevy Camero and a trophy will be awarded to the best Camero in the show.

Fifty sponsor plaques will be awarded in a variety of categories such as Best Paint and Best Interior. An awards ceremony will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by The Cruise of the Champions.

Vehicle registration fee for the show is $40 and includes a dash plaque and a goodie bag.

Over the past nine years, the event has raised more than $120,000 that has been divided up in the form of $100 to $1,000 mini-grants to Mountain Area elementary schools that have submitted funding requests.

Tri-tip barbecue Friday 7

The car show barbecue tri-tip dinner, prepared by Kiwanis club members, will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday at the community center. Dinner tickets are available at Dorsey's Hallmark in the Old Mill Shopping Center, or from any Kiwanis Club member. Cost for the complete dinner is $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

A pancake breakfast will be held Saturday 7-11 a.m. including scrambled or cooked to order eggs, sausage or ham, coffee and juice for $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Under 5 free.

A tri-tip sandwich, hamburger and hot dog lunch will be served 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday.

During the two-day event, a 50-50 cash raffle will be held and more than $5,000 in merchant donated gifts will be available through a separate raffle.

There is no admission fee to the car show.

Sponsors include Fresno Lexus, Sierra Tel, M&M Screen Printing of Clovis, Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, Bud Light, Lawson Rock & Oil, Inc. and the Sierra Star.
