Sue Okenyi, author of "Healing the Hero's Heart," will be the keynote speaker at this years Sierra Telephone sponsored Patriot Day at 9 a.m., Sept. 11 at the companies headquarters on Crane Valley Road (426).
Okenyi was an employee of Pelco corporation in Fresno during the 9/11 tragedies and played an intricate role in assisting with the humanitarian efforts extended by her employer as well as the company's involvement in donating the video security cameras that watched over the search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero.
Her role provided a unique perspective of these events which she shares with personal accounts, through her eyes and those of survivors' families and friends.
Patriot Day is intended to recognize and show appreciation to all veterans, active duty military and emergency services personnel for their dedication to the community and the country, as well as honor the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Included will be a special flag-raising ceremony and pledge of allegiance, patriotic music performances, 21 rifle salute and taps.
Veterans, active duty military and emergency services personnel will be presented with recognition gifts.
Immediately following the event, the Sierra Telephone Safety Awareness Committee will serve All-American apple pie and ice cream in the pavilion located behind the Sierra Telephone building. A tri-tip lunch will also be available for purchase from American Legion Post 110 with to-go plates available 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Healing the Hero's Heart," authored by Okenyi, will be available for purchase.
Each year following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Sierra Tel has made a visible statement of patriotism by affixing flags to each of its company vehicles. The flags are flown from Patriot Day on Sept. 11 through Veteran's Day on Nov. 11.
