The Minarets Mustangs Junior League Senior team stampeded Reedley 50-28 Aug. 25 as the new program notched their first of what appears will be many wins for the new start-up program. The Mustangs introduced themselves in grand fashion as they scored on their first play from scrimmage, a 40 yard around end run by Luke Tovar. It was the first of four TDs for the talented runner who has scored seven touchdowns in the Mustangs first two games. A fifth Tovar touchdown was called back due to a penalty.
Quarterback Nolan LeForge had his share of the limelight, throwing for three touchdowns in the win against the Titans. Tre Nickaloulous, Jake Menezes and Christian Conti hauled in touchdown receptions from Le Forge. The quarterback threw a fourth to Griffin Ensenis that was nullified by a penalty. Luke Pritchett had six catches on the day as LeForge enjoyed great protection in the pocket throughout the game.
Tovar ended the game with more than 200 yards on the ground.
Coach Bob Tovar was very impressed with his team's play.
"This team is going to be tough to beat with a ground game with those numbers and LeForge going to the air," coach Tovar said. "As teams go, the Mustangs are as balanced a team as they come."
The Mustangs are quickly making teams take notice of the 'New kids on the block.' They lost a heartbreaker to Fowler the prior week 36-35.
The Titans scored a couple times late in the game as the Mustangs substituted freely. In two games the team has scored 86 points and they seem to only be getting stronger as they improve on their weaknesses. If not for a couple key calls that went against them, the team might have put another 21 points on the board.
Junior team wins
The Mustangs Junior squad was nearly as impressive in their first win of the season beating Reedley 36-22. The team ran and passed at will while showing maturity on the defensive side of the ball.
The team was looking to rebound from their first loss of the season last week to the Fowler Fire hawks, 14-0.
Quarterback Cody Woolsey had several impressive long completions and the running game was very strong. It was a see-saw battle with the two teams exchanging touchdowns till the fourth quarter when the Mustangs pulled away.
The Reedley game was characterized by the multiple penalties and turnovers that plagued both teams. Reedley took the first play from scrimmage and turned a 60 yard run for touchdown to lead 6-0, which would last past halftime.
Preston Conti had a 50-yard kick-off return in the second half and several good runs by quarterback Cody Woolsey ended in a touchdown and two point conversion resulting in an 8-6 lead for the Mustangs. The fourth quarter was a see saw battle with the Titans rallying to wrestle the lead away from the Mustangs on a 55-yard TD pass.
Answering back on the next drive was QB Woolsey leading his team down the field for a game tying 25-yard pass into the end zone to Chance Burrough. First year kicker, Lucas Howell, kicked the 2-point conversion for the final two points of the game.
The Mustangs will host Orosi at Minarets High School Saturday. Orosi played the Mustangs tough in a preseason scrimmage. Juniors take the field at 5 p.m. and the Senior team kicks-off at 7 p.m. The Pee-Wees play an abbreviated game between the Junior and Senior game.
