Emerson Action, 9, of Ahwahnee is the new Central Valley go kart champion in the 7-10 Rookie Comer Class and brother Blake, 11, placed second in the 8-11-year-old Junior 1 Class.
The two racers won their trophies at the Central Valley Championship Aug. 19 in Atwater. The kart drivers, wearing heavy race suits, gloves and helmets, competed as the mercury neared 100 degrees.
The young racers make-up the two-member team of Action Law Racing, sponsored by attorney Eugene Action and Graphix Plus of Clovis.
Racers ranged from 5 years old to over 50 with most drivers coming from Fresno. The 2012 Central Valley Championship were hosted by the Kerman Kart Club at Tom Dash Memorial Speedway in Atwater.
In the main event, Emerson Action, driving her No. 24 kart, rounded turn one at the start of the race in third place behind Elijah Potter and Jared Korth. She first passed Potter by the end of the first lap and Korth in the second lap. After that, she never looked back while six more drivers battled for positions behind her, Emerson continued to increase her lead and wins the 16-lap race 8.3 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, hitting top speeds of 50 mph.
With the victory, Emerson became the new Rookie Comer Central Valley Champion of 2012.
Brother Blake had the fastest qualifying heat time in his division.
In the Junior 1 main event, Blake started out in third, but at turn one he quickly passed the two racers in front by hugging the inside of the track while the two other drivers took the turn wide.
He maintained the lead for 10 laps before dropping back to fourth in lap 15. On the finale lap of the race he chased down and passed two drivers for an exciting second place finish in the Central Valley Championship 2012 in Junior 1 (2-cycle) Class.
Prior to the Aug. 19 season-ending race, Blake took second and Emerson took third in their divisions at the July 29 Atwater Kart Club Championships.
