Coaches of the four teams that make up the Yosemite Badger Youth Football program, opened the program's 34th season last week with practices at Coarsegold Elementary School, welcoming about 50 players.
The four teams are Seniors (13-14), Juniors (11-12), Pee Wees (9-10) and Might Mights (6-8).
Head coaches of the four teams are Clyde Derickson, Eric Peterson, Aaron Pelz and Pete Mascola respectively.
The program is still accepting players and the registration fee is $79 per player and includes the player's uniform and equipment, not including shoes.
"This year's registration fee is to celebrate what it was in 1979, the year the program was founded," said John Kenyon, program treasure. "In addition to learning the basics of the great game of football, all players in the program are guaranteed playing time."
Last season the Senior team went 11-1 and won the Tri County Superbowl, defeating the San Joaquin Memorial Panthers 39-6. In the 12 games last year, the Senior team outscored their opponents 485-107.
The Senior team has just one returning player from last year, quarterback Tristan Eames.
The Junior team went to the Superbowl game last year and was defeated by the Panthers 38-22. The Pee Wees made the play-offs and the Mighty Mights went undefeated.
The Tri-County Youth Football League is made up of Yosemite, Chowchilla, Los Banos, Tranquility, Kerman, Washington Union and San Joaquin Memorial.
The youth teams will participate with Yosemite High School players at a team camp at Camp Pacifica in Nipinnawasee Aug. 11 and 12. This is the first time the youth players have attended a camp with high school players. The younger players will 'buddy-up' with high school players to learn what its like to play high school football.
Camp t-shirts are being provided by AT&T Cellular of Oakhurst.
