Mackenzie Arnold and Jonah Dacanay have earned the Marlins Swimmer of the Week awards for their performances at the Quad Swim Meet that was held at Chowchilla High School on July 7.
The three teams participating in the meet with the Marlins were the Los Banos Tiger Sharks, the Firebaugh Area Swim Team and the Chowchilla Redfins.
"During this meet, both Mackenzie and Jonah swam their life time best in every event that they swam," said Marlins head coach Tammy Kudela.
New to the Marlins this season, Arnold, 9, has made tremendous growth in her swimming this season according to Kudela.
"She finished her 50 yard freestyle race with a time of 50.97, cutting her best time by more than four seconds and she finished her 50 yard breaststroke in 58.89 seconds, dropping 8.5 seconds off her previous time," Kudela said. "Her greatest improvement occurred in her 50 yard backstroke where she beat her best time by almost 11 seconds, coming in at 1:05.68."
Dacanay, 8, cut his best 25 yard freestyle by two seconds finishing the race in 27.55. He also reduced his 25 yard backstroke time by more than four seconds coming in at 32.43 seconds. His greatest improvement was in his 25 yard butterfly where he took more than seven seconds off of his best time, coming to the wall in 43.3 seconds.
"Both Mackenzie and Jonah are additionally recognized for their eagerness to learn new skills, their strong work ethic and their positive attitude in practice," Kudela added.
Dacanay started swimming with the Marlins last season and is joined this year by his brother Xavier. He is the son of Lordelyn and Roger Dacanay.
Arnold is the daughter of Buz and Chelsea Arnold and is also joined by her brother, Owen, who is new to the team this year as well.
