Young swimmers recognized

The Mountain Area Marlins Swim Team has recognized Owen Ogilvie, 4, and Daria Wood, 11, as its Swimmers of the Week for their performances at a three-team meet held in Atwater at Buhach Colony High School on June 19. The meet included the Marlins, the Chowchilla Redfins and Stingrays of Atwater.

At the meet Ogilvie, a first year Marlin, improved his 25 yard backstroke time by more than eight seconds.

He finished his race in 58.85, placing fifth overall in the event. He is also recognized for his focus and work ethic during practice.

"Owen always puts his best effort forward each practice to learn each stroke and new swimming skills," coach Tammy Kudela said.

He is the son of Adam and Katherine Ogilvie and brother to Audrey and Felina who both are talented Marlin swimmers.

Wood has been swimming for the Marlins for three years and is the daughter of Cathy and Chad Wood.

"Daria has shown incredible improvements in time in all of her events at this tri-meet and has really been working very hard at practices,' Kudela said.

Wood improved her 100 yard Individual Medley by 11.09 seconds, completing her race in 1:29.50. Her 41.56 fifth place finishing time for her 50 yard backstroke was also a life-time best, improving her previous time by 6.04 seconds.

In addition, she cut her best 50 yard butterfly time by 4.20 seconds allowing her to capture a second place finish overall in this event with a final time of 39.99.

Both swimmers were commended by the Marlins coaching staff for their efforts which allowed them to achieve their personal best swims at this meet.
