Volunteer firefighters Helen George and Richard Wood honored for service

Volunteer firefighter Helen George was honored May 31 during a public ceremony at Madera County Fire Station 10 in Yosemite Lakes Park in Coarsegold for more than 15 years of service as a volunteer firefighter.

George was surprised with a plaque recognizing her for her service from Station 10, presented by Captain Chris Haynes, and a certificate of appreciation for 17 years of service from the Madera County Board of Supervisors, presented by Supervisor Frank Bigelow, also a volunteer fire captain for Madera County Fire Station 17.

Bigelow said there are very few people who have volunteered for the fire department as long as George has. Bigelow said he remembered when she first joined the station, and that she has always worked hard and done whatever is necessary in the call of duty, including climbing ladders to battle a blaze, or enter a burning building to protect residents.

Volunteer fireman Richard Wood, who died in December, was also honored later in the ceremony by Station 10 with his name added to the company's Wall of Fame. A plaque will be presented to his wife Aileen and their four Sean Thomas, Jarad, Travis and Trever in August, Haynes said.

Fellow fireman and friend, Second Lieutenant Brian Donaghy, said Wood often responded to calls, even in the middle of the night, and that he was the most respected person at the station.

Wood joined Station 10 in 2002 and also served as a Merchant Marine deck officer until his retirement last year, along with volunteering as a coach for his children. He was an incredible firefighter and person who will be missed by all, he said.
