"The Romans used to conquer little villages in the Mediterranean. They'd go into a little Turkish town somewhere, they'd find the first five guys they saw and they would crucify them. And then you know that town was really easy to manage for the next few years." -- Al Armendariz, Administrator for EPA's South Central Region.
When the video clip of this EPA administrator got out onto the Internet it created quite a stir and another embarrassment for the Obama white house. Many protests have sprung up over the comment with many people angry that administrator Al decided to use the term, "crucify them." People were upset that Al had used the term that relates to the horrible death suffered by Jesus Christ.
The term 'crucify them' did not upset me as Jesus was only one of thousands crucified by the Romans. It was after the death of Jesus that the cross changed from a symbol of death and political control into a sign of peace and love which represents the sacrifice made by Jesus.
What is upsetting to me about the despicable comment is that arrogance of the use of governmental power that far exceeds what was ever intended by the people who drafted the legislation.
Unfortunately for us, Al Armandariz is correct in how to control the masses. Fear, intimidation, threat of destruction and loss of property are strong motivators to get companies to "go along." When the IRS, EPA, or OSHA does it we are to call it government in action and the regulatory process. When private parties do it we call it extortion.
Armandariz, who resigned from his position last week, has become the face of how the government regulators are crushing us. Companies find it will lead to bankruptcy if they fight the regulators so they "cave in" not because it is right but it is cheaper.
Now I can already hear the supporters of governmental regulation overreach citing examples of building codes and environmental concerns such as oil being dumped into water tables and air pollution. Most of us understand the need for those regulations but the regulators know that they only need to enforce some minor point of some law and the company will spend thousands or millions of dollars cleaning up the mess and/or penalties.
PETA and the ACLU along with others of their ilk use the threat of lawsuit to harass corporations. The Rainbow Coalition was also known to target corporations who either contributed to Reverend Jackson or become the "next target."
The legal crucifixions do work and companies find that they must go along or perish. That is not freedom and it needs to stop.
I was in the back room area of a very small local business last week. On the wall in the store room was a government mandated poster telling workers of their rights and wage minimums. Most who are reading this article know the poster of which I am speaking. I saw the invoice for the cost of that poster and it was an expense to that family-owned operation of over $200 for them and the poster will need to be replaced in two years.
The government requires each and every business to buy these high priced posters or face financial penalties. It's not a tax and it's not a fee. It is an office supply. Hogwash -- it's extortion. If this small mom and pop operation had refused to buy and post the poster the government would shut them down till the small business owner ponies up the fee.
We all have learned to cave in because we have seen others destroyed by the government. It wasn't the term of the death method that was upsetting but the fact that the culture of our public servants has become one of extortion and fear mongering laced with an attitude of arrogance that allows for lavish parties and huge bonuses all the while they are bleeding the American people dry.
At least we know that Al understands his way works and he shared it with his staff. It is sad that Al never spoke up for us and complained to his bosses that those actions were wrong or contacted the press and became a "whistle-blower." No ... Al did what he did because he knew that the "higher-ups" would crucify him if he failed to get the corporations in line.
Organized crime bosses know it works. Stalin knew it worked. Hitler knew it worked. The EPA knows it works.
Make your vote work.
