The Madera County Public Health Department will provide community clinics in October where flu shots will be available for those 12 years of age and older. Children younger than 12 are recommended to see their pediatricians for shots, or can go to the Madera County Public Health Department for their immunization.
Seasonal epidemics of influenza (the flu) occur every year in the United States, beginning in the fall. Typically, the epidemics cause thousands to tens of thousands of deaths and about 200,000 hospitalizations.
Since the 1940s, a vaccine has been available but unfortunately has not been used as much as it should be, according to the Madera County Health Department. To prevent hospitalizations and deaths caused every year by the flu virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recommended all U.S. citizens older than six months of age receive the influenza vaccine. Flu shots are typically also available from your doctor, or from a local pharmacy during the months of October and November.
This year's flu vaccine will contain protection against antigens like those found in H1N1, H3N2, and B/Brisbane.
Clinics are held at the department every Wednesday from 8 to 10 a.m. Special evening immunization clinics are held the second and last Wednesday of each month from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Flu season lasts through February, so October and November are appropriate months to get a flu shot. Flu vaccinations are free of charge, but donations are accepted.
