Lead by Paige Russell's nine goals, along with eight more from Leslie Lauterbach and Ashley LeForge, the Yosemite High School girl's varsity water polo team took fifth place last weekend at the Tulare Union Tournament.
The team opened play with a strong 11-6 win over host, Tulare Western. With just 15 minutes between games, the team lost to Garces High School of Bakersfield, 11-6.
The Badgers dropped a hard fought game to Mt. Whitney High School of Visalia, 9-8, and came back strong in their final game of the tournament, beating Hanford High, 15-5.
Kainana Taylor had five goals during the tournament and LeForge led the team in steals with five, followed with four each by Taylor, Lauterbach and Jamie Uhl.
Goal tender Kaley DeSilva blocked 32 shots on goal during the two day tournament.
Mustang fundraiser
More than 200 attended the Minarets High School football fundraiser Saturday at the Coarsegold Community Center. The event raised $7,000. Guest speaker was former Oakland Raider's quarterback Darryl Lamonica.
The dinner was held to help pay for $20,000 worth of recently delivered equipment and uniforms needed to equip the first year team.
The program is mostly funded by donations from parents, local businesses and the Minarets Football Boosters led by Darren Soares, president.
The Mustangs will face Fresno Christian in their first scrimmage tomorrow in Fresno.
Lilly continues streak
Yosemite High graduate Ted Lilly continued his winning streak to five games with the Los Angeles Dodgers by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Aug. 24. Lilly was traded to the Dodgers from the Chicago Cubs in July.
Lilly had his 17 scoreless inning streak broken as the Brewers scored a run in the bottom of the second.
River Creek Women's Golf
Members of the River Creek Women's Golf Club braved the heat Aug. 24 to play a "Field Strokes" tournament, plus a putts competition.
Linda Shepler came in first with a net score of 36. Angela Peters also shot a net 36 and the tie was broken by the lowest score on the hardest hole on the course, No. 1, which Shepler won.
The low putts contest was won by Phyllis Nell with 30 for 18 holes.
A meeting will be held after golf on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the clubhouse. The election of officers for next year will be held.
Sierra Meadows Women's Golf
On Aug. 25, the Sierra Meadows Women's Golf Club played front or back nine, less half the handicap. The club members also counted putts for the entire 18-hole game.
Kathy Phelps took first place with a net 34 and Joyce Norman took second place with a net 34.5.
The putts contest was won by Beth Gindorf with a total of 32 putts for 18 holes.
