"How Art Shapes Our Lives," an art column by Sal Maccarone of Mariposa, appears for the first time in today's Sierra Star.

According to Maccarone, "the intent of the series of articles is to help enlighten readers regarding the interesting and important subject of art."

"I will be writing about current exhibitions and why they are important along with profiles of artists and why they are significant," Maccarone said. "I will also write about the meaning of terms such as Impressionism and Realism and art history. "

Maccarone says his goal is to present a look into, "the big picture" of the world of art while pointing to something that is located close by.

"I always try to provide readers with as much information as is possible within the confines of a short article," Maccarone said. "Hopefully, readers will be left with a better awareness of a particular subject and those who are interested beyond what I have to say will feel the need to look deeper into these subjects."

Maccarone is a well-known furniture maker, sculptor and author of woodworking books and has been involved in a number of projects in the Mountain Area.

He began his woodworking career 40 years ago after graduating from San Jose State University with degrees in art history and sculpture.

"I am happy to be sharing some of my thoughts about the subject that I love the most -- art," Maccarone said. "With this column, I will be pointing out how art helps to shape our everyday lives."
