Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to Mary Hemnann's letter "Free Spay and Neuter Day" from the Aug. 19 edition of the Sierra Star. Sixteen years ago, I got an "unwanted" puppy from Raley's that I named Lady.
The first thing I did was take Lady to a veterinarian to have her checked out and spayed. I paid for the costs. I did not expect the veterinarian to donate his time and materials.
Lady gave me the unconditional love and happiness that come with owning a pet. After 13 years, I had to put her down. I would like to have another dog, but can no longer afford the expense that comes with pet ownership.
Before getting a pet that has not been "fixed," he/she should ask and answer this question. Can I afford the expense of having the animal spayed or neutered at the time I take ownership? If the answer is no, then don't get the animal.
