The Madera County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services has completed Madera County's Hazard Mitigation Plan, which is now ready for public review and comment.

The public can log on to the county's website at madera-county.com to view the entire document.

The document will be posted under the special interest links icon located on the county's web face page.

The federally funded plan maps out about 70 measures to reduce the county's exposure to numerous hazards, which include wildfires and floods. Some mitigation examples address increasing culvert capacities, drainage improvements, defining and implementing fire-safe practices and strengthening or replacing earthquake vulnerable facilities.

After receiving public input, the goal is to have the plan adopted by the Madera County Board of Supervisors, Madera City Council and the North Fork Rancheria's Tribal Council by late September or October.

Once formally adopted and implemented, the plan will allow emergency agencies to apply for various federal grants that will help offset the costs associated with disaster recovery.

Hard copies of the plan are available for public review at the following locations: Madera County Sheriff's Department, 14143 Road 28, Madera and Madera County Sheriff's Department Oakhurst Substation, 48267 Liberty Drive, Oakhurst.

The public will have until Sept. 2 to comment on the plan.

Details: (559) 675-7770, Oakhurst office e-mail: sheriff@madera-county.com.
