Dale Phillips died July 27, 2010, at the age of 82.
He was born May 23, 1928, in Spencer, Ind. to a livestock trucker and singer.
His first job was delivering newspapers for the Spencer Evening World and after high school graduation he worked for the newspaper in the composing room.
Mr. Phillips was a 25-year resident of Ventura before moving to Ahwahnee five years ago.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and then worked with the Navy for 43 years as a civil service employee.
While in the Navy Reserve, he worked as a scuba diver, an activity that became a lifelong hobby.
Mr. Phillips enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing, square dancing and hiking and was a skilled marksman, having completed training at the Fort Sight firearms Institute in Nevada.
He was a Scoutmaster and was a life member of Masonic Lodge 214 in Ventura.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dottie of Ahwahnee; sons Frank of Heilsbronn, Germany, and Sean of Oregon City, Ore.; daughters, Kim, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Dottie, of Ventura; sister, June Sullivan, of Greenwood, Ind.; grandchildren Jenny, Franky, Bryan, Annabel and Sasha; and great-grandchildren Lucas and Melina.
A memorial service was held Aug. 5 at Oakhurst Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oakhurst Lutheran Church, 39255 Black Road, Oakhurst, CA 93644 or a memorial with the American Cancer Society.
