More bad weather and injuries took their toll as the Yosemite Badgers girls soccer team finished off North Sequoia League play last week and prepared for the Division III playoffs.
Thursday the Lady Badgers traveled to Easton to take on the Washington Union Panthers (1-9-0 NSL). Yosemite took control of the run of play and possession limiting the Panthers offensive possessions.
But the Badgers (7-3-0 NSL) had their own problems in front of the net and let several scoring opportunities slip away before reaching the scoreboard in the 25th minute.
The midfield worked the ball into the left corner of the offensive third to Riley Cooks who crossed the ball into the center to Lacey Smith. Smith took a touch and shot the ball. The Panther goaltender was able to get a hand on the ball but could not prevent the goal and the Badgers were up 1-0 to complete all of hte first half scoring.
In the second half, Washington stepped out of position and allowed Cooks to get behind the Panthers defense and score twice in 10 minutes with assists by Beatrice Tenorio and Jamie Cogdell. With Yosemite up 3-0 the Panthers maneuvered for a score but Yosemite's Jamie Cogdell tracked back and cleared the ball off of the line. Final score Yosemite 3, Washington Union 0.
On Friday Yosemite traveled to Madera Ranchos for a rematch with the Liberty Lady Hawks (10-0-0 NSL). T The Lady Badgers were again their own worst enemy in the rematch. In the first five minutes Yosemite gave up a goal kick when they failed to mark Liberty's Jordan Moineau in the center of the goal who shot past an unprotected Badger goaltender to put the Hawks up 1-0.
As the momentum began to shift in the Badgers favor, the team cleared a ball directly to the states leading goal scorer Victoria Burnell, who scored two minutes before half-time giving the Hawks a 2-0 cushion.
With 20 minutes remaining in the match, Liberty took down Jori Johnson in the penalty box giving the Lady Badgers a penalty kick. Cooks stepped up and put the ball into the lower left corner making the score 2-1.
The Lady Badgers faced Dinuba in Badger Stadium on Wednesday but results were not available at press time.
