Coming on the heels of seven straight league championships and a 58-game league winning streak, the Yosemite High girl's basketball team opened the 2010 North Sequoia League season against rival Sierra High School with an overwhelming 66-39 victory last week.
With the Badgers dominance in recent years, the Chieftains have been placed in the position of perennial runners-up. The games usually promise a new offensive or defensive wrinkle by Sierra to throw the Badgers off their game in hopes of an upset. Unfortunately for Sierra, that has not happened in the past five years.
Lefty guard Sienna Gonzales got the Badgers going by swishing two 3-pointers to start the game. Gonzales ended up with four treys and 12 points as the Yosemite team made 11 shots outside the 3-point arc.
Sydnee Fipps also had four 3-pointers on her way to 23 points while Jenay Herring, Amanda Rudd and Taylor Jensen also hit from long range.
The Badgers outscored Sierra in each quarter and took a 41-26 lead into halftime. Sierra was held to just 14 points in the second half.
Four Yosemite players scored in double figures as Herring had 14 and a school record 12 assists. Rudd finished with 10 points.
Paige Brown was the leading scorer for the Chieftains with 10 points.
The team is currently ranked No. 3 in the Valley behind Clovis West and Hanford.
The Badger junior varsity team won their match with Sierra 44-36. Jade Bain and Samantha Aceves scored 11 points each for Yosemite.
On Friday, the Yosemite games with Liberty were canceled because of bad weather and will be made up later in the season.
Tomorrow night the Yosemite Basketball teams host Chowchilla with the Girls JV opening the four games at 3:30 p.m., followed by the boys JV at 5, girls varsity at 6:30 and the boys varsity at 8.
