Sharon and Betty Elliott visit the grave site of Jesse Leo Elliott, Betty's husband and Sharon's father-in-law, to honor him on Veterans Day at Oakhill Cemetery. Jesse Elliott, who was born in 1922 and died in 1999, was a World War II Navy veteran. A community Veterans Day service was held in the Little Church on the Hill, led by the Rev. David Sebastian, pastor of Oakhurst Lutheran Church. The service gave thanks for the sacrifice of thousands of men and women for the freedoms Americans enjoy. Included in the service were an invocation, scripture readings, prayer and patriotic hymns. Sue Moore sang, "God Bless the USA." The Little Church on the Hill was built in 1892 by community volunteers on land set aside by area pioneer Robert Nichols. The Little Church was the only house of worship for nearly a half century and remained in use until 1954. The church was moved to Oakhill Cemetery in 1957 and has undergone restoration over the years.
