Steve Kuhtz gives advice to his son, Jack, at a recent Sluicebox Derby. The Lions Club-sponsored Sluice Box Derby is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 14 who live in Madera, Mariposa or Fresno counties. Inspection begins at 9:30 a.m. The derby is from noon to 4 p.m. on Indian Springs Road (418). Each car entered is $10, plus $2 for the driver. First-place drivers will receive $100 savings bonds; second and third-place drivers will be awarded trophies. Drivers who do not have cars may use one of the five provided. Details: (559) 683-7977
