On Tuesday, Madera County citizens voted no on Measure D, a Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) increase. The measure failed by 76.4 percent, with only 23.6 percent voting yes. Absentee votes had not been tallied at the time of publication.
Compared to the November election, in which 82 percent of the nearly 35,000 registered voters in the county’s unincorporated areas cast ballots, less than half voted this week on the TOT increase.
Statewide, voter turnout was low and only one of the five propositions on the ballot passed.
Proposition 1A, Rainy Day Budget Fund, was voted down by 71.7 percent; Proposition 1B, Education Funding, was voted down by 67.9 percent; Proposition 1C, Lottery Modernization, was voted down by 67.4 percent; Proposition 1D, Children's Services Fund, was voted down by 67.2 percent; Proposition 1E, Mental Health Funding, was voted down by 69.1 percent; and Proposition 1F, Elected Officials', was passed by 71.2 percent.
