"In any game, you do the things you do best and you do them over and over and over." ~ Vince Lombardi, head coach, Green Bay Packers, 1959-1967
The North Sequoia League has announced its all-league selections for the 2008 football season and the Yosemite Badgers football team garnered its share of the prizes.
The Badgers locked up two of the six League Special Awards categories. As expected, senior Jesse Lownsbury was selected as the league's Offensive Player of the Year and junior Jackson Glines was named Utility Player of the Year.
The Badgers on the First Team Offense are Lownsbury as quarterback, Greg Smith on the offensive line and Jon McNamara as wide receiver.
On the First Team Defense Yosemite placed Robert Rainey was the top vote-getter on the defensive line, Erik Sotelo as linebacker and Glines as defensive back.
Yosemite also placed Jayme Lee on the second team as running back, Kalon Miller on the offensive line and Glines as wide receiver.
Julian Lozano received Honorable Mention on the offensive line as did Detri Dunn as wide receiver and defensive back and Taylor Allsup as tight end. On defense, Smith and Lee were named to the second team as linebackers.
As the Offensive Player of the Year, Lownsbury's credentials were impressive.
In the six NSL games, Lownsbury passed for 1,269 yards, completing 87 of 158 passes (55 percent) with 17 touchdown passes and only four interceptions.
The Yosemite southpaw averaged 211.5 passing yards per game with a QB rating of 107.
Lownsbury also rushed 31 times for 79 yards and four touchdowns.
As the Utility Player of the Year Jackson Glines rates up with the best. The junior all-purpose back accounted for 699 total yards in league play with 377 coming on 27 pass receptions, 134 yards on punt returns including a 76 yarder for a TD versus Dos Palos, 71 on 12 carries (5.9 yards a carry) 38 yards on kickoff returns, 21 yards on an interception return and 38 yards on a fumble recovery.
Oh yeah, he completed his only passing attempt against Liberty for a 16 yard touchdown. Defensively, Glines had 47 tackles (28 solo) and a pair of interceptions.
