What volunteer Joe Mitchell thought would be a simple project turned into a two-year effort to modify the ‘Welcome to Oakhurst’ sign perched on a Deadwood turnout. The local sign ordinance, Cal-Trans easement regulations and Chamber of Commerce specifications all became part of a community effort to install the sign with each of Oakhurst’s fraternal and service club signs framing the bottom and sides. Donations of time and funding came from the VFW, Yosemite Lumber, Stewart Crane Service and Joe Mitchell.
