It's hard not to be depressed.

Most Mountain Area gas prices have surpassed or are hovering around the $4 a gallon mark, and first class stamp prices increased this week to 42 cents apiece.

Those forever stamps are looking better and better.

People are losing their jobs nationwide, and the costs of milk and corn and other goods are rising as well.

Things are pretty bleak out there.

Take into consideration all of the layoffs and high prices and add in the real estate nightmare, and it could very well mean we are smack dab in the middle of a recession.

But we feel strongly, as cliched as it may sound, that this too shall pass.

Our local economy rebounded from the 1991 recession and Sept. 11, and we will survive this one.

In the meantime, however, we encourage our residents to stay focused on the positive.

We have a lot going on here locally to be proud of.

For starters, 86 Yosemite High School seniors received more than $300,000 in combined community awards and scholarships May 7. And many members of our community are combining their efforts and energy for the remarkable Relay for Life event slated for this weekend. The festivities celebrate cancer survivors and remember the people who lost their fight.

If we take some time to participate in the amazing events our community is known for, congratulate our fellow students and residents when they deserve it and stay focused on the positive, perhaps it just might make the struggles we are going through a little bit easier to deal with.

Now, if only they had created a forever gas card, oh, about 10 years ago.

The issues above are discussed and chosen by the Sierra Star editorial board, made up of Betty E. Linn, publisher, and David Richards, editor.
