More than 50 years ago, the Sierra Star was founded as a way to create a method to the madness of various events being scheduled on the same day.
The goal was to get the word out to our readers to make sure they knew what was going on when and where.
Well, five decades and the invention of the Internet later and the problem hasn't changed much.
Whether you are a member of a club, an organization, a committee, a county official or simply an area resident having a yard sale, we encourage you to take a hard look at the calendars in our community and at the Sierra Star before you schedule something.
One look at the chamber's calendar online and the problem is clear.
On April 26 alone, there is the Bass Lake Spring Clean, the annual Elegant Auction for the Oakhurst Community Park, the Wood Carvers Rendezvous, the Waste Tire Amnesty Day and a chamber mixer.
The more events that are scheduled on the same day, the lower the turnout will most likely be for each one.
At the Sierra Star, we try to post as many meeting notices as possible and include previews on special happenings. We also feature a Calendar page each edition for non-profit events and for groups who meet on a weekly or monthly basis.
Two other good resources for event information are the calendars posted on the Web sites of the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce, www.oakhurstchamber.com, and the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, www.yosemitethisyear.com.
Our area is growing and more and more events are being held each year. With a little bit of organization, we can work toward less and less scheduling conflicts, which in return will ensure better turnout.
The issues above are discussed and chosen by the Sierra Star editorial board, made up of Betty E. Linn, publisher, and David Richards, editor.
