Have plans for this weekend?
We have an idea.
The Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival comes to town today through Sunday, featuring DVD showings of classic racing films, along with free car shows, racing legends and some nice breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
The festival is the brainchild of Mountain Area resident Dave Wolin, who has been racing cars for nearly five decades. It was created in 2007 as a way to bring tourists to our communities during the off-season, and kicks off for 2008 tonight and continues through Sunday.
This may be the only automotive film festival in the world.
Where else can you see classics like the "Sound of Speed" and also world premieres, such as "Hot Rod Horror," that was filmed in the valley.
This is a great event in that it will bring much needed money into our local hotels, stores and restaurants. It also provides our residents a chance to see some unique cars and take in some racing films as well. There is also a nice option this year where moviegoers can purchase single tickets if they just want to see one film at a time.
We appreciate the work Wolin has put into this festival, and we hope to see you there.
The issues above are discussed and chosen by the Sierra Star editorial board, made up of Betty E. Linn, publisher, and David Richards, editor.
