Forty years ago
The California Highway Commission allocated $43,000 to construct 13 turnouts for slow-moving vehicles on Route 41 between 3.3 miles north of Route 145 in Madera County and 0.4 mile south of the Yosemite National Park boundary in Mariposa County. State Highway Engineer John A. Legarra said the money will come from a special $6 million fund in the state highway budget for identifying and correcting locations of accident concentrations.
Residents from mountain area gathered in the Oakhurst Community Center to discuss organizational details of the SHSA. The board of directors that were elected is Jack Gyer, president; Clifford Harrington, vice president; J. Frank Martin, treasurer; Paul Tilden, Nathan Sweet, and William M. Sell Jr., directors. June 30 was set as the last day to sign up as a charter member. Gyer stressed that their goal is to perpetuate the area's historic heritage. A schedule set forth includes construction of a fire-proof repository and library.
Thirty years ago
The largest and most varied display of art work ever to be presented in the Mountain Area will be on display this weekend during the second annual music, art, dance, drama and services festival (MADDS) at YHS. In addition many more artist and craftsmen will be presenting "art-in-action." A variety of entertainment will be provided in the YHS gym.
It's rodeo time again as the Coarsegold puts on its cowboy hat and invites all to the 26th annual rodeo. The California Cowboys Association Rodeo's junior and professional riders will provide the thrills. This rodeo features all the traditional events, bull-back riders, bareback and saddle bronc riders, calf-ropers, bull-doggers and team ropers. Barrel Racers riding quarter horses at top speed rounds out the program. Scotty Turner will be announcer again and keeping fans entertained.
Twenty years ago
"Buzz" and Gertrude Krohn are honored as grand marshals of the Raymond Parade.
The Krohn family has been a part of the history of Raymond and area since the late 1800s. The Krohns said the parade was a trip down memory lane.
Harry and Heidi Baker drove them in a 1914 Model T Ford, which Baker had to crank more than once during the parade.
Erna Kubin, owner of the Elderberry House restaurant, was hostess to vintner Robert Mondavi and his wife Margaret for one of her winemaker dinners. He stressed that wines "should harmonize with fine cuisine."
