"It just gets bigger and better each year, and we had excellent weather Saturday" Smokey Bear Run/Walk Eva Busto one of the events organizers said.
The 22nd annual Smokey Bear Run/walk was once again a success with more participants and clear skies and there was water and energy drinks available and snacks for everyone in attendance.
"There were 641 participants Saturday which includes all children races, runners and walkers," Busto said. "That is up 117 from our numbers from last year.
In the day's other big events, the overall winner of the Mens' 10K Run was, once again, Roosevelt Cook with a time of 31:41 beating his first place time of a year ago of 31:58. He broke his prior course record of 31:44 which he had set in 2006.
Cook is a cross country and track coach at Roosevelt High School in Fresno. He said he trained hard for the race, running 80 miles in seven days leading up to the race.
"I'm training for a 5K invitational at Cal Poly on Oct. 17, then another 5K -- Race for the Cure -- at Fresno State University," Cook said.
Both races are leading up to the Trail of Two cities, a half marathon in Fresno on Nov. 8 which Cook plans on participating in.
One of his students, Humberto Osuna, a senior at Roosevelt, won the 2-mile race for the second year in a row.
Additionally, Sami Ikuma ran a 12:17 which is now the women's two mile course record. She broke the two mile course record set by Colleen Warmerdam of 12:19 set in 2008.
